Skim or Dive vs Blinkist: which fits how you read?
19 October 2026
The short answer. Blinkist is a subscription library of short summaries of nonfiction books, written to be read or listened to instead of the book. Skim or Dive is an ebook reader for the full books you already own, with a slider that sets how much detail each passage shows, from the author’s original prose down to a one-sentence condensation. Blinkist replaces reading a book. Skim or Dive is for reading one, including the parts you’d rather move through quickly.
We make Skim or Dive, so read this with that in mind. We’ve tried to be fair about where Blinkist is the better choice, because for plenty of people it is.
What is the difference between Skim or Dive and Blinkist?
They solve different problems. Blinkist’s product is the summary: a short written and audio version of a nonfiction book’s key ideas, picked from its own library. You finish the summary, not the book.
Skim or Dive’s product is the book. You import an EPUB or text file, and every section can be read at one of five detail levels. Level 5 is the original text, unchanged. Level 1 is a one-sentence condensation of that same section, and levels 2 to 4 sit in between. You move the slider while you read, so a dull stretch can go by in a few lines and the next chapter can be read word for word.
Which books can you read?
Blinkist covers the titles in its own catalogue, which runs to thousands of books and is mostly nonfiction: business, psychology, self-help, science and history.
Skim or Dive has no catalogue at all. You bring your own DRM-free EPUB or TXT files, fiction or nonfiction, including public-domain books from places like Project Gutenberg. Books locked to another store’s DRM, such as most Kindle purchases, can’t be imported, and PDF isn’t supported yet.
Who writes the condensed version?
Blinkist’s summaries are written by its own editorial team, one per book. Skim or Dive’s lower detail levels are generated by AI from the book’s own text, section by section, and the original passage is always one slider position away. That way you can check a condensation against the real text any time you want.
Does either one work for novels?
Blinkist is built for nonfiction, where a book’s argument can be boiled down to its key ideas. Fiction doesn’t compress that way: the point of a novel is the experience of reading it.
Skim or Dive works with novels because it never replaces the text. The usual way to use it is to read in full and drop the detail only for the stretch that has stalled you, then come back up when the story picks up again.
How much do they cost?
Blinkist is a paid subscription with a free trial, plus a limited free tier that gives you one pre-selected summary a day. Check Blinkist’s site for current prices in your region.

When Blinkist is the better choice
- You want the ideas from many nonfiction books and have no plans to read them in full.
- You want to discover books, and use a summary to decide which ones to buy.
- You mostly listen: commuting, at the gym, doing chores.
- You don’t already own the books as files.
When Skim or Dive is the better choice
- You want to actually read the book, but keep abandoning books partway through.
- You read fiction.
- You already have EPUB files, or read public-domain classics.
- You’d like to read most of a book in full and move quickly through the parts that drag.
Can you use both?
Yes, and they fit together well. A summary is a good way to decide whether a book is worth your time. If it is, Skim or Dive is where you read it, at full detail where the book is good and lower detail where it isn’t. For more on that approach, see how to finish more of the books you start, or compare the main ebook reader apps.
Skim or Dive is a free ebook reader for iPhone, iPad and Android. Import your own book, read it in full, and use the detail slider for the stretches that would otherwise make you quit.
